Langenscheidt Wörterbücher App Reviews
No Portuguese?
I could not believe there is no German/Portuguese option in this new app! Verdammt!
I have come to like Langenscheidts high quality translations. You can question whether you need it given online resources. But it does have high-quality data and is also available when youre traveling. Its also great to have the domain translations such as technical or economy or ..... And, seriously, who would still look up things in an actual heavy-weight dictionary if theres a computer solution that you always got with you? Downsides: - you have to manually select with the mouse in which direction to translate. Seriously? How hard can it be to search both directions at once? - Thesaurus functionality is missing, which is a realy pity and weaker than some free online dictionaries. I still like the quality of the data though. - why do I manually have to select which dictionary to search through? If a word cant be found in one, just use the other. Or just show the merged entries one after the other with a little symbol saying which dictionary they came from. - Langenscheidt should register themselves as a source for Force Click on words to improve user experience. - I am a little annoyed that they update the app every month with the only change being a free lexicon of the month. Some investment in the basic software should have higher impact. Hidden feature: - you probably didnt notice but if you happen to be able to locate the paragraph key on your keyboard then Command-Paragraph lets you look up words in Langenscheidt from any application. Thats awesome. Except for the paragraph key. You can change that in systems keyboard settings.
This application is "free", but it gives you hardly any functionality at all, unless you purchase the in-app dictionaries. Besides, all the in-app dictionaries I saw were German: German-French-German, German-Danish-German, German-Russian-German, etc. In other words, unless you speak German and unless you are willing to pay 10-80.00 euro extra, this app is a waste of time. To be honest, Langenscheidts dictionaries are usually great, so if you happen to speak German and to be willing to pay for 10.00-80.00 euro for the dictionaries, this app may be perfect for you.
Ugly UI
Not only dictionaries are too much expansive… the User Interface is just ugly.
one star means: i hate it!
This is not the way you can compete with Leo or others! Shame on you for this app.
Very poor
It is very poor!
The price of this app is "free" (or it was when I downloaded it), but once you log in you find that all you have is a basic wordlist that you can look up, but if you want more than that you have to buy expensive add-ons to get any good use out of this product--in the app description above, it doesnt say that you have to buy add-ons. For example, the expert-level English-German dictionary add-on costs $89.99! I think this is misleading. Also, looking up words from other applications does not work - I right-clicked a word in an email message and on a web page, and selected "Lookup in Langenscheidt Dictionaries" (which is grammatically incorrect - "Lookup" is a noun, not a verb). What happens is that the dictionary application pops up and puts the cursor in the search field, but the field remains blank and no definitions appear in the app screen. I would have thought that looking something up from another app meant that Langenscheidt would have auto-populated the screen with the definition of the word I selected for me - not require me to type the word in again. I think this is a poor implementation and poor user experience. I am uninstalling this app right after I finish this review, but I will check it again in the future to see if they get it right in a later version.
At the first sight I already doubt how can a langenscheidt dictionary be free, but still i thought it would be maybe a short term discount. So I downloaded it, wondering if it will be the same quality like always from Langenscheidt. And then I was totally disappinted. The embedded dictionary, so-called expert dictionary, doesnt even cover some basic words. And of course to activate the fully functionable dictionary you will have to purchase the €89 dictionary. Not useful app at all if you want to get a free and good dictionary. Well, I mean there is seldom such thing, therefore one start more than necessary. But very lame UI by the way.
I use the Expert German-English, and it is a solid dictionary. The app works well too, although I wish it had a search function to find certain words within a given definition (like Apple’s Dictionary.app). I also wish it could lead me to words with an “ß" when I type the equivalent “ss". There’s no excuse for it not knowing that equivalency. What annoys me most are the frequent updates that offer nothing other than a chance to check out one of their basic dictionaries. That wouldn’t be so bad, but often I need to restore my purchase afterwards. That’s the annoying bit. Couldn’t they make this offer from within the app without having to have us download a new version each time? And couldn’t they make this bit optional?
